It is important to understand that you are not a policeman or a detective. Your job is to serve customers and keep order in the store, not to catch criminals. Therefore, do not take on the role of law enforcement if it is not provided for in your job description and if you do not have special training.
Before you act, make sure you really saw the theft and not just thought you did. Remember or, if possible, review the recording from the camera. Note in your mind or on paper what exactly the person took, where they hid it, and how it looked. It is important to understand whether this is a minor theft (a few candies, one pack of cheese) or something more serious. Large stores often have a rule: do not stop thieves if the amount stolen does not exceed a certain threshold. This is because the court costs and the risk to employees often exceed the cost of the goods.
Also pay attention: is this the first case or has it happened before? If he is a regular customer and steals regularly, this may not be an isolated offense, but a system. But if you see it for the first time, it may be an accident or a difficult life situation. In any case, do not jump to conclusions, rely only on facts that you can confirm.
Trying to talk to the customer face-to-face is the riskiest, but sometimes the most human option. If you approach him and quietly say, \"I noticed you forgot to scan the item,\" this may give him a chance to save face and not involve the police. Especially if you are sure that this is an isolated case and the person is not aggressive. This can even turn the thief into a loyal customer — he will understand that you did not make a big deal out of it and will be grateful for the chance.
But there is also the other side. If you make a mistake — and this happens often — you risk humiliating an innocent person. A regular customer may be upset and write a complaint to management, and then you will have to explain your actions. You may also encounter aggression if the thief decides that he has been \"exposed.\" And if he is mentally unstable or under the influence of substances, you risk not only a conflict but also a real threat to your health.
Finally, you have no right to search people or demand that they show the contents of their pockets. You can only offer to pay for the item or politely ask them to return it. If they refuse, your authority ends. Trying to hold someone against their will is illegal and the thief can sue you for illegal detention.
Calling the police is the most legal and safe way to solve the problem. You are transferring responsibility to professionals who know how to act in such situations, have the right to detain, and can objectively assess the situation. This reduces your personal risk and protects you from possible accusations of misconduct.
However, this option has its drawbacks. First, calling the police may take time, and the thief may leave before they arrive. Second, this creates additional paperwork — you will have to give evidence, write explanations, spend time on hearings. Third, this may spoil the atmosphere in the store and scare off other customers, especially if a patrol with sirens arrives. And most importantly, if the stolen item is worth less than a few thousand rubles, the police may register the case, but there is likely to be no real continuation. At best, the thief will be fined, but this does not guarantee that he will not come back.
However, if you see a thief who has been caught before, or if the theft is not minor, the police is the right choice. You do not risk your safety and act strictly within the law.
So, the general scheme of behavior should be:
1. Do not panic, do not show that you noticed him. Continue working to not scare and not create a tense atmosphere. 2. Record the moment of the theft visually or through the camera (if possible). Note the time, place, assortment. The more details, the better. 3. If the amount of the theft is insignificant (for example, less than 300-500 rubles), and you are sure that the person is not aggressive, you can approach him and quietly offer to pay for the forgotten item. Use the phrase \"You probably forgot to scan,\" giving him a chance to save face. 4. If he denies it, do not argue and do not threaten. Say: \"Okay, I just wanted to make sure. If anything, we are always happy to see you in our store.\" And let him go. This is cheaper than a scandal and a loss of reputation. 5. If the amount of the theft is serious (more than 1000-1500 rubles) or this is not the first case, do not make contact. Just remember the features, write down the time and call the police after he leaves the store. If there is a security service, inform them. 6. If the thief becomes aggressive, threatens or tries to run away, do not try to hold him back by force. This is dangerous and illegal. Just let him go, but record all the details for the police. Your life and health are more important than any item. 7. After any incident, prepare an internal report for management. This will help track repeating cases and develop a strategy for prevention.
If you decide to talk to the thief, it is important to choose the right tone and words. Speak softly, calmly, without accusations. Your task is not to expose, but to offer a way out. Phrases like \"Maybe you accidentally didn't notice\" or \"Maybe you forgot to scan the item\" allow you to preserve his self-esteem and do not provoke a defensive reaction. Never use the word \"thief\" or \"theft\" until it is officially proven. This is not only offensive, but may also be considered defamation if you make a mistake.
If he starts to get angry, acknowledge his right to emotions: \"I understand that this is unpleasant, but I have to fulfill my duties.\" Stay polite and firm, but do not raise your voice and do not argue. Remember, your calmness is transmitted to the interlocutor.
It is important to know your rights and obligations. You do not have the right to search the customer, demand to open a bag or personal belongings without his consent. You also do not have the right to use force. Detaining a citizen is the responsibility of the police or a security service that has the corresponding authority. If you try to detain a person by force and cause him harm, you may be prosecuted even if he really stole the item.
You have the right to observe and provide recordings to the police. You can also call the police and report a crime. Everything else is already within the jurisdiction of law enforcement agencies.
There is no universal solution to the situation with a thief. Each case is unique. But there is one main principle: the safety of the employee and other customers is always more important than the cost of the goods. If you are in doubt, it is better to call the police or report to management than to risk yourself and your reputation. Remember: a regular customer who steals is not your friend, but a violator. Your calmness, professionalism, and correct tactics will help solve the problem with minimal losses for everyone.
